Instant e-PAN Eligibility: New PAN or Lost-Card Reprint?

Reviewed on 22 October 2026; current official service guide, not a new policy announcement.
Who can use Instant e-PAN?
The Income Tax Department’s FAQ describes Instant e-PAN as a free service for an individual who has not already been allotted a PAN, has a valid Aadhaar with an Aadhaar-linked mobile, is not a minor on the request date and is not covered as a representative assessee under the stated provision.
Check the live portal’s prerequisites before starting. Official help pages can be updated, so follow any additional access or verification requirements displayed rather than relying on an old screenshot tutorial.
A lost card is not a new-PAN case
The department explicitly says a person who already has PAN but has lost the card cannot use this service to obtain another new PAN through Aadhaar. Choose an eligible download or reprint route for the existing allotment instead. If you cannot locate the number, establish the old record before submitting a fresh application.
This distinction is useful for Mumbai applicants who need a copy for banking, employment or another document process. The urgency of the request does not change first-allotment eligibility.
Preparation checklist
- Confirm that no PAN has already been allotted to you.
- Review your Aadhaar particulars for accuracy.
- Have access to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
- Check the live service prerequisites and authentication instructions.
- Keep the acknowledgement ID after submission.
Use your own contact details and remain in control of verification. Do not let another person register their email or take over your account simply to help with the form.
Electronic PAN versus physical card
The service provides an electronic PAN. A request for a physical card is a separate consideration and must follow the applicable issuing-channel conditions. Do not assume that every electronic allotment includes free physical delivery.
If the allotment request fails, read the official guidance and error before deciding on another application channel. Keep references so you do not accidentally repeat an uncertain request. Use the official status/download facility to confirm the outcome.
What “free” means
The official Instant e-PAN service is free. Optional help from a private business is separate and should be quoted transparently; it is not a government fee or privileged approval service. Eligible applicants can use the official self-service option themselves.
