Indian ID Validity 2026: Does Your PAN or Aadhaar Expire?

Understanding Your Indian Document Validity in 2026

As of September 2026, keeping your official documents valid and updated is more critical than ever. Many Indians wonder, "Does my Aadhaar card expire?" or "What is the validity of my PAN card?" While some documents like your PAN have lifetime validity, others like a passport or driving licence have a fixed expiry date. Understanding these rules is essential to avoid problems with banking, travel, or government services. This guide breaks down the validity and update requirements for India's key identity documents.

Aadhaar Card: No Expiry, But Updates Are Essential

Your Aadhaar number is valid for your entire life and does not expire. However, to ensure it remains a reliable proof of identity, UIDAI has put in place rules for keeping the information on it current.

The 10-Year Document Update Rule

UIDAI strongly recommends that every resident update the supporting documents (Proof of Identity and Proof of Address) in their Aadhaar records at least once every 10 years. This ensures the Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR) remains accurate.

  • Free Online Updates: The government has been running a service for free online document updates through the myAadhaar portal. This deadline is often extended, but it's crucial to check the official UIDAI website for the latest end date in 2026.
  • Offline Updates: You can also get this done at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre for a nominal fee.

Biometric Updates are Crucial

Biometrics (fingerprints and iris scan) can change over time. It is mandatory for children to update their biometrics when they turn 5 and again at 15. Adults who face authentication failures are also advised to update their biometrics to ensure smooth e-KYC and other Aadhaar-based services.

PAN Card: Lifetime Validity with a Condition

A Permanent Account Number (PAN) card, once issued, is valid for life and does not have an expiry date. However, its operational status depends on one critical factor.

Aadhaar-PAN Linking is Non-Negotiable

As per the latest rules in 2026, any PAN card that is not linked with an Aadhaar card is considered 'inoperative'. An inoperative PAN cannot be used for:

  • Filing Income Tax Returns (ITR).
  • Opening new bank accounts or Demat accounts.
  • Making financial transactions above a certain limit.
  • You will also face a higher rate of TDS (Tax Deducted at Source).

You can check the status and link your PAN on the Income Tax Department's portal. If you need assistance, services like ours can help you complete the process correctly.

Indian Passport: A Fixed 10-Year Lifespan

Unlike Aadhaar and PAN, an Indian passport has a strict expiry date. For adults, it is typically valid for 10 years from the date of issue. For minors, the validity is 5 years or until they turn 18, whichever is earlier.

When to Renew Your Passport

It is highly recommended to apply for renewal within the last year of your passport's validity. Travelling internationally with less than six months of validity on your passport can be problematic, as many countries deny entry. Renewing an expired passport follows the same process as a regular renewal, but it's always better to act before it expires.

Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)

A PCC, which is often required for foreign travel, visas, or employment, is also linked to your passport. It has a very short validity, usually just 6 months from the date of issue. Plan your applications accordingly.

Driving Licence (DL): Validity Varies by Age and Type

The validity of a driving licence in India depends on the age of the holder and the class of vehicle.

  • Private Vehicles: A DL for non-transport vehicles is valid for 20 years from the date of issue or until the holder reaches the age of 50, whichever comes first. After 50, it needs to be renewed every 5 years.
  • Commercial Vehicles: A DL for transport vehicles usually requires renewal every 5 years, along with a medical certificate.

You can renew your DL within one year of its expiry without having to retake the driving test. However, driving with an expired licence is a punishable offence.

Voter ID (EPIC): Valid for Life, Address is Key

Your Voter ID card, also known as the Elector's Photo Identity Card (EPIC), is valid for life and does not expire. However, its practical use depends on your current address. If you move to a new residence, especially to a different constituency, you must apply for an address change to be able to vote in local and national elections. You can now also download a digital version, the e-EPIC, from the official portal.

Digital Signature Certificate (DSC): The Shortest Lifespan

For business owners, freelancers, and professionals, a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a vital tool for filing GST returns, ITRs, participating in e-tenders, and other MCA compliances. DSCs have a short, fixed validity of 1, 2, or 3 years. It's crucial to keep track of the expiry date and renew it in time to avoid any disruption to your business operations.

Note: All fees and specific procedural rules mentioned are subject to change. Please verify the current charges and processes on the respective government portals before applying.
