GST Registration Documents: Maharashtra Eligibility First

Reviewed on 22 October 2026. This is a process guide, not a new tax announcement.

Check liability before collecting documents

A Mumbai business should first establish whether GST registration is required or being chosen voluntarily. The nature of supplies, turnover, business locations and compulsory-registration provisions can affect the answer. A document checklist is not a substitute for a case-specific tax assessment.

Notification 10/2019–Central Tax, dated 7 March 2019 and effective from 1 April 2019, provides an exemption for eligible persons exclusively supplying goods with aggregate annual turnover not exceeding ₹40 lakh, subject to exclusions. This is not a blanket threshold for every business, every service provider or every transaction. It is historical legislation, not an October 2026 change.

Match the legal entity

The official GST registration manual describes Part A and Part B of the normal-taxpayer application. The legal name must correspond with PAN, while constitution, promoter or partner, authorised signatory and business-premises information must match the applicant. A trade name is not automatically the same thing as the PAN-based legal name.

A sole proprietor and a partnership should not use an identical entity-document pack. Review the live upload list for the constitution selected. Banking details may be requested in the relevant workflow, but an old private checklist should not be presented as a universal initial-upload rule.

Preparation checklist

  • PAN and the corresponding legal name.
  • Applicable constitution documents and promoter or partner details.
  • Authorised-signatory information and relevant authorisation evidence.
  • Photographs and identity evidence requested by the live form.
  • Ownership, rental or consent evidence matching occupation of the premises.
  • Accessible email, mobile and required authentication arrangements.

For rented or shared premises, explain the actual arrangement. Do not create a false ownership statement to simplify the application. Ensure addresses and names are consistent across the relevant records.

Apply and respond to queries

The portal manual directs applicants through Services, Registration and New Registration. Follow the current Part A verification and Part B instructions, save the temporary reference where applicable, and retain the submitted application reference. Complete any applicable authentication steps through the legitimate service.

If an officer requests clarification, respond to the specific issue and keep the supporting evidence. A submission acknowledgement is not a GSTIN or approval. Avoid starting duplicate applications before checking the existing status.

Plan for responsibilities after registration

Voluntary registration can bring ongoing compliance responsibilities. Ask about filing, invoicing and applicable obligations before treating a GST number as just another business identity card. Private assistance cannot guarantee registration or remove tax liability.
