Aadhaar Name Update Limit: Errors and Exception Requests

The normal limit is not just an online limit

UIDAI’s published update-limit circular states that the normal name-update limit is twice in a lifetime. Calling this “two online changes” can mislead applicants into thinking a visit to a centre resets the limit. Check your update history and any rejection reason before deciding what to do next.

A birth-date correction has a different normal limit and a different procedure. Do not use a name-change declaration as a universal solution for every Aadhaar field.

Spelling error or substantive change?

UIDAI’s name/gender exception SOP dated 28 October 2021 addresses changes beyond permitted opportunities. It also describes operator typographical errors, transliteration errors and certain regional-language corrections that may be considered for non-counting through the prescribed process.

That does not make every spelling difference automatically exempt. A complete or first-name change has different evidence considerations, including Gazette evidence under the cited SOP. Establish the nature of the discrepancy before preparing documents.

Organise a case-specific evidence pack

• Your Aadhaar copy and the currently recorded name.
• The name you are requesting, with consistent spelling in the relevant script.
• Accepted identity or change evidence applicable to the case.
• Previous update acknowledgements and the exact rejection reason.
• Gazette or marriage-related records where the current official process calls for them.

An affidavit alone does not establish entitlement to a change. Check the latest UIDAI instructions rather than copying another applicant’s paperwork.

Before submitting an exception

Compare the proposed name with PAN, passport, banking and other important records. Make a plan for any separate corrections those departments require. Aadhaar acceptance does not automatically alter another authority’s database.

Use the official exception-handling route for your situation and keep every acknowledgement. If asked for further evidence, answer the actual query. A private assistant cannot reset the update history or approve a regional-office exception.

Common promises to avoid

Be cautious about guaranteed approval, undocumented shortcuts or requests for unrestricted account access. Gazette publication can support a relevant name-change case but is not a guarantee that every Aadhaar request will succeed.
