Aadhaar Doc Update 2026: Free Deadline & Process

Aadhaar Doc Update 2026: Free Deadline & Process

What is the Aadhaar Document Update?

As of September 2026, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is urging all residents to update their demographic details. This specific initiative, known as the 'Aadhaar Document Update,' focuses on re-validating your information by uploading recent Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents. It is especially recommended for individuals whose Aadhaar cards were issued more than 10 years ago and have not been updated since.

It's important to distinguish this from a demographic correction. A document update confirms your existing details (like name spelling and address) are still correct with new proof. A correction, on the other hand, is for changing details like your name, date of birth, gender, or mobile number, which follows a different process and may have associated fees.

Why is This Update Crucial in 2026?

Keeping your Aadhaar details validated with recent documents is more important than ever. The government is pushing for a cleaner, more accurate database to ensure the smooth delivery of over 1,700 central and state welfare schemes. A non-updated Aadhaar can lead to friction and failures in authentication.

  • Enhanced Accuracy: It ensures that the information linked to your Aadhaar number is current, reducing mismatches during KYC verification for bank accounts, mutual funds, or new SIM cards.
  • Improved Service Delivery: Accurate data helps in the seamless delivery of government benefits, subsidies (like LPG and PM-Kisan), and services directly to you.
  • Future-Proofing Your ID: UIDAI has indicated that regular updates strengthen your Aadhaar. Failing to do so might lead to difficulties in using Aadhaar-based services in the future.

Aadhaar Update Deadline & Fees (As of September 2026)

For several years, UIDAI has offered the online document update service completely free of charge to encourage widespread adoption. This free service has a deadline set for later in 2026. While the date has been extended multiple times, it is crucial not to wait until the last minute.

Please note the following:

  • Online Updates: Uploading POI/POA documents through the myAadhaar portal is free until the specified deadline. After the deadline, this service will likely become chargeable online.
  • Offline Updates: Performing a document update or any other correction at a physical Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK) or designated centre has always been a paid service. The standard fee for such updates usually applies.

We strongly advise you to check the official myAadhaar portal or UIDAI website to confirm the exact final date for the free online update and the current fee structure for in-person services.

How to Update Your Aadhaar Documents Online for Free

The online process is designed to be user-friendly. You will need your Aadhaar-linked mobile number to receive the One-Time Password (OTP) for login. Make sure your supporting documents are scanned and ready in PDF, JPG, or PNG format.

  1. Visit the Portal: Go to the official UIDAI website and navigate to the myAadhaar portal.
  2. Log In: Click on 'Login' and enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the captcha. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP to proceed.
  3. Select the Service: On your dashboard, look for the 'Document Update' service. A message will show that the service is free until the deadline.
  4. Verify Your Details: The screen will display your current demographic details (name, gender, DOB, address). Please verify that they are correct.
  5. Upload Documents: You will be prompted to upload your Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents. Select the document type from the dropdown menu and upload the scanned file for each.
  6. Submit: Once both documents are uploaded, submit your request. You will receive a Service Request Number (SRN) to track the status of your update. No payment is required if you complete this before the deadline.

Accepted Documents for POI and POA

UIDAI accepts a wide range of documents. Ensure the document you upload has your name and photograph for POI, and your name and address for POA. The name on the document must exactly match the name on your Aadhaar.

For Proof of Identity (POI)

  • PAN Card / e-PAN
  • Voter ID Card / e-EPIC
  • Valid Indian Passport
  • Driving Licence
  • Ration Card with Photograph
  • Government-issued ID card with photo

For Proof of Address (POA)

  • Valid Indian Passport
  • Voter ID Card / e-EPIC
  • Bank Statement or Passbook (not older than 3 months)
  • Electricity, Water, or Gas Bill (not older than 3 months)
  • Registered Rent/Lease Agreement
  • Property Tax Receipt (not older than 1 year)

What if You Face Problems or Miss the Deadline?

Many users encounter issues like document rejection due to poor scan quality, incorrect document type, or file size errors. If you miss the free deadline, the online service will require a nominal payment, similar to the fee at physical centres. The bigger risk is not the small fee, but the potential for your Aadhaar to become inactive or cause KYC failures down the line, disrupting essential services.
